Quiet Music, Weak Sounds -静かな音楽、小さな音- は、サウンドスケープの視点から音を見つめ直し、われわれの世界に隠された音を体験してみるワークショップ／イベントです。講師は、サウンドアーティスト、プログラマーとしてNYを拠点に活動するヨハン・ディートリッヒと、アジアの音/音楽をフィールドワークし続ける柳沢英輔の二人です。ヨハンの来京により、今回のコラボレーションが実現することになりました。 彼らのアプローチにはある共通点があり、それは「静かな音楽、小さな音」に耳を傾けることです。これは、大きい音・強い音を求め続けてきた長い音楽の歴史に逆行する試みかもしれません。 二人と普段は聴こえない音を探して京都の町を歩いたり、エオリアン・ハープの音に耳を澄ませたり、静かな音の世界を覗いてみませんか？小さく弱い音を拾い上げること、静かな音楽を奏でることは、私たちの世界の捉え方に少なからず変化を与えてくれるでしょう。

Quiet Music, Weak Sounds is a collaboration between sound artists Johann Diedrick and Eisuke Yanagisawa to discover, amplify, and share the subtle sounds in Kyoto, Japan. 

Over the course of four weeks, the Diedrick and Yanagisawa will explore Kyoto’s soundscape with custom microphones, amplifiers and field recorders. 

Informed with their findings, the two will host a series of workshops, teaching members of the community how to build and use their own sonic investigation tools. 

They will turn participants into acoustic explorers and take them on explorations of Kyoto to find, record, edit, and present their own found sounds. Afterward we will construct our own Aeolian Harps and introduce our own sounds to Kyoto’s Kamogawa river path. Finally, the two will present their findings to the community at large, in the form of a talk and reception party.

Workshop 1　4/22 Sat. 10:00-16:00 音を拾う装置をつくる　

サウンドアートの世界を知るとともに、小さな音、弱い音を収集するための特別キット（マイクとアンプと出力イヤホンのセット）を自分の手で作ります。DIY でツールを作りながら、アーティストが自分の方法でアイデアを形にしていくノウハウを学びます。

◇定員：7 名　◇参加費：1,500 円＋材料費3,500 円 ※途中昼休憩あり

Naked Ear Workshop 

This workshop will introduce participants to the world of sound art and provide techniques for making tools to create these experiences. This will include the fabrication of a mobile listening kit for use in installations, performances, and scientific research. 

◇Capacity：7 people　◇Participation fee：1,500 yen＋Material cost 3,500 yen ※We will have a 1 hour lunch break.

Workshop 2 4/23 Sun. 13:00-18:00 小さな音に耳を傾ける

作成したキットや様々なマイクロフォンを持って、京都の町に出て、ふだん意識して聞くことのない音を探し、録音します。さらに記録した音を各自が編集して発表することで、わたしたちのまわりに存在する多様な音の世界を体感し、それを皆で共有します。 

◇定員：7 名　◇参加費：1,500 円 ◇持ち物：ノートPC（参加者はあらかじめ音声編集ソフトのAudacityをインストールしておいてください。以下よりダウンロードできますhttps://audacity.softonic.jp/）

Field Recording Workshop

We will use mobile listening kits, field recorders and various microphones to go to the field and find weak sounds in the environment. This workshop encourages listeners to reimagine their sonic environment by playfully exploring the world through their ears. Back at Social Kitchen we will edit and share our sounds together.

Workshop 3 4/30 Sun. 13:00-18:00 風の力で音を奏でる

自然の風によって音を奏でる伝説の楽器「エオリアン・ハープ」を製作し、鴨川で一斉に演奏します。風の通り道やスピード、方角など、目に見えない自然の力によって音色が変わります。人が演奏するのではない、知られざる音の世界をのぞいてみましょう。実際に音が鳴るかどうかは天候次第（？）ですが、その体験から様々な発見があるのではないかと期待しています。

◇定員：7 名　◇参加費1,500 円＋材料費1,000 円

Aeolian Harp Workshop

In this workshop we will build Aeolian Harps, legendary instruments played by the wind. We will bring their natural singing sound to the Kamo River and develop a consciousness around wind speed, path, and direction in the surrounding environment.

約4 週間のリサーチ成果のプレゼンテーションや、サウンドパフォーマンスなどを行います。交流会もございますので、ワークショップに参加していない人も、ぜひご参加ください！

After our collaboration, Diedrick and Yanagisawa will give a talk about their work together, followed by a live performance. Come and join us! This party is co-hosted by Anthro-film Laboratory.

PROFILE

ヨハン・ディードリッヒ Johann Diedrick

サウンドパフォーマー、プログラマー。サウンドスケープ・シンポジウム（イェール大学／ アメリカ）、the New Interfaces for Musical Expression（NIME）conference（韓国）、the Invisible Places（ポルトガル）、YCAM（山口県）など、世界各国のグループ展、カンファレンス、フェスティバル等に多数参加。現在は、メトロポリタン美術館のソフトウェア開発者。

Johann Diedrick makes installations, performances, software, objects and workshops that let people play with sound. His work has been exhibited internationally in numerous group exhibitions, conferences, and festivals, including the Soundscapes symposium (Yale University / USA), the New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) conference (Seoul, Korea), and the Invisible Places, Sounding Cities conference (Viseu, Portugal). He has worked as an InterLab Researcher at YCAM (Yamaguchi, Japan) and a software developer at Qosmo (Tokyo, Japan). He is currently a software developer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

柳沢 英輔 Eisuke Yanagisawa

フィールドレコーディスト、音文化研究者。京都大学大学院アジア・アフリカ地域研究研究科修了。2015 年より同志社大学文化情報学部助教。主な研究対象は、ベトナム中部高原の少数民族のゴング文化。フィールド録音作品に、Ultrasonic Scapes（Gruenrekorder）、Music of the Bahnar People from the  Central Highlands of Vietnam（Sublime Frequencies）など。

Eisuke Yanagisawa is an ethnographer, field recordist, and filmmaker. Since 2006, his main research focuses on the Gong Culture of ethnic minorities living in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. His field recording works were released in various labels such as Gruenrekorder, Very Quiet Records, Sublime Frequencies and his audiovisual works were screened/exhibited in various film festivals, museums around the world. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Culture and Information Science, Doshisha Univiersity.
