Akio Suzuki ” Listen to snails”
「カタツムリに聴く」
ぼくのようなアナログ思考の人間は、ものごとを物理的に把握しようとしない。時を忘れ、ぼんやりと過ごすことが多い日常から、見えない渦の虜になっている。
このことから「点 渦(うずだて)」なんて展示のタイトルを考えてみたけれど、音を流れるものとして捉えるには難がありそうだ。「八つの鉄板の衝立(ついたて)を配置するんだ」と、妻に話したところ「点 蛸(たこだて) !」なんて言って笑いころげた。今時珍しい〈ナンセンス会話〉。
1976年に、東京にあった南画廊で展示演奏をした「ハウリング・オヴジェ」は、十個の径の異なる鉄板の輪っぱを床に配置してワイヤレス・マイクロホーンを差し入れたりして操るものだった。
1997年には、ザールブリュッケン市立ギャラリーで発表した「na mi」は、回転するテープルの上に複数のラジオを置いて、電波ノイズの指向性のハーモニーを楽しんだ。
2009年、金沢21世紀美術館・展示パフォーマンスでは、タイトルを「愛 車」として、館内をラジオを乗せた台車を押して巡った。そして、2010年の横浜市民ギャラリーでのインスタレーション「たたずみ」は、2m×4m の鉄板を直角に曲げた衝立で乱れた迷路の形に構成した。
この度の展覧では、それらの体感を他者に譲る意味合いがある。過去の制作のどれもが、確と手応えを与えてくれたとは言えない。ぼくのやって来た、道草的な音のプロジェクト「点 音(おとだて)」も然り。このチャンスに、ぼくの性格に同調するところのこの生物にあやかって、改め感覚を解き放ってみたいとの目論見です。
因みに、我が家の屋号は「ペンギン かたつむり」。そのおかげで物が配達されるのです。

Listening to Snails
Analog thinkers like me do not try to grasp things physically. We are captivated by the invisible whirlpools of our daily lives, where we often forget about time and spend our time in a daze.
This is why I came up with the title of the exhibition, “Point Whirlpool,” but I think it would be difficult to understand sound as something that flows. When I told my wife, “I’m going to put up eight iron plate impostors,” she laughed and said, “Octopus!” She burst out laughing. A rare “nonsense conversation” nowadays.
In 1976, I exhibited and performed “Howling Object” at Minami Gallery in Tokyo, where I placed ten steel rings of different diameters on the floor and manipulated them by inserting wireless microphones.
In 1997, “na mi,” shown at the Saarbrücken Municipal Gallery, placed multiple radios on a rotating tape measure and enjoyed the directional harmony of radio noise.
In 2009, for an exhibition performance at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, he pushed a cart with a radio around the museum, titled “Aisha”. In the installation “Tatazumi” at the Yokohama Citizen’s Gallery in 2010, a 2m x 4m steel plate was bent at right angles to form a maze of disorder.
This exhibition is meant to be a handover of these experiences to others. I cannot say that any of my past works have given me a definite response. The same is true for my project “Otodate,” which is a wayward sound project. My plan is to take this opportunity to unleash my senses in the spirit of this creature that is in tune with my personality.
